Why Pain?

Still Life of rock with Hope in Japanese script

Your body starts showing signs of pain.  “Why does it have to be this way?”  you ask.

Life throws a curve ball in your relationships.  “Why is this happening to me?” you ask.

Your finances dry up and you wonder how you’re going to pay your bills.  “This fear is overwhelming me.” you say in your heart.

Why do these things have to happen?  Why does pain in its many forms come to all of us?  Believe it or not, that still, small, voice that speaks to all of us spoke a powerful truth to me one day as I was rescuing a beetle who had gotten into my house. (yep – I’m one of those people who never kills anything!  Lol…and in this case I’m glad I didn’t.)  I was gently picking him up as he was trying like crazy to get away from me.  I spoke to him and said, “I’m not trying to hurt you, I’m trying to help you”.  It was at that moment I remembered a line from the movie, “The Lord of The Rings” where Gandalf rose up in anger at Bilbo because he saw that Bilbo was being enticed by the ring and the evil it represented.  He said to Bilbo, “I’m not trying to hurt you, I’m trying to help you”.

What does this have to do with your health you may be wondering?  Or maybe you’re just wondering who this crazy woman is who is talking to a beetle!  Either way, there is treasure in this article if you choose to look for it.  And that treasure is this – if your body is showing signs of pain, it’s to point you towards making changes in your health habits.  If your relationships are showing signs of getting in a tangled mess, it’s so you can set new boundaries, ask for forgiveness, or possibly even let go and walk away.  If you’re having money troubles, it’s an opportunity to take back your power and see how you can increase your income or decrease your spending.  The point is, pain is an opportunity.  It’s not to harm you, but to help you.  Help you grow, help you feel the exhilaration that comes with true and lasting change, and help you see just how powerful you really are.

Health is about much more than losing a few pounds and starting to exercise.  True health is a whole person journey towards radiating God’s glory in every part of your life and being.  Physical health is part of that journey, but there are many other areas that show health or the lack thereof, and if you notice where you’re experiencing pain, you’ll see the opportunities that are waiting for you to change, to grow, and to become all you’re meant to be!
